Overview
The Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) has released the syllabus for the main examination for the Assistant Forest Conservator, Class-2, and Range Forest Officer, Class-2 posts. The exam is descriptive and consists of five papers: Gujarati, English, General Studies-1, General Studies-2, and General Studies-3. Each paper is for 150 marks and has a duration of 3 hours.

Paper-1: Gujarati
This paper, with a total of 150 marks, includes various descriptive and writing skills:
- Essay writing on descriptive, analytical, philosophical, or current issues (20 marks).
- Elaboration of ideas from poetry or prose (10 marks).
- Summarization and comprehension of a given passage (10 marks each).
- Formal speech writing, statements for media, letter writing, and report writing (10 marks each).
- Translation from English to Gujarati (10 marks).
- Gujarati Grammar (20 marks).
Paper-2: English
The English paper is also for 150 marks and focuses on similar writing and comprehension skills:
- Essay writing on one of five topics (20 marks).
- Letter writing, press release/appeal, report writing, and formal speech writing (10-15 marks each).
- Precis writing and reading comprehension with multiple-choice and short-answer questions (15 marks each).
- Translation from Gujarati to English (15 marks).
- English Grammar, Vocabulary, and Usage (20 marks).
Paper-3: General Studies-1
This paper covers History, Cultural Heritage, Geography, Science & Technology, and Indian & Gujarat Economy. Topics include:
- History: Indus Valley Civilization, Vedic Age, Bhakti Movement, and the history of modern India and Gujarat.
- Cultural Heritage: Arts, literature, sculpture, music, dance, and pilgrimage sites of India and Gujarat.
- Geography: Physical features, natural resources, demographics, and important geo-physical events in India and Gujarat.
- Science & Technology: Awareness of IT, space, defense, robotics, and nanotechnology, along with cyber security, energy, and sustainability.
- Indian & Gujarat Economy: Economic planning, public finance, budget, and inclusive development. It also covers agriculture, rural economy, food security, and e-technology in supply chain management.
Paper-4: General Studies-2
This paper is divided into four main sections:
- Indian Polity and Constitution: Features of the Constitution, functions of Union and State Governments, distribution of powers, and the judiciary.
- Governance and Social Justice: The role of civil service, NGOs, and e-governance. It also addresses poverty, hunger, health, education, and human resource development.
- Ethics in Public Service: Ethics and human interaction, emotional intelligence, human values, and anti-corruption mechanisms.
- Indian Society: Characteristics of Indian society, diversity, gender roles, and social challenges like communalism and regionalism.
Paper-5: General Studies-3
This paper has a significant focus on forestry and environmental science:
- Forest & Environment: The relationship between forests and the environment from a historical, social, and economic perspective.
- Silviculture: Principles of silviculture, natural and artificial regeneration of forests, and nursery techniques.
- Agroforestry & Social Forestry: Scope and need for agroforestry, social/urban forestry, and the principles of Joint Forest Management (JFM).
- Forest Soil & Watershed Management: Soil conservation, types of erosion, and the role of forests in soil and water management.
- Environmental Protection & Biodiversity: Pollution, sustainable development, environmental laws, and the role of trees and forests in environmental protection.
- Wildlife Management: Legal framework for wildlife conservation, management of specific habitats, and species conservation projects like those for tigers, lions, and crocodiles.
